Community in Action

The recent severe weather resulted in Mellor Primary School, along with many others in the UK, remaining shut for the first few days of the Spring Term. Despite the best efforts of the SMBC gritting teams the snow was never going to clear without further action.
A group of about 30 determined staff, parents and local residents saw to it that the closure was as short as possible. With the blessing of the Headteacher and Chair of Governors a work party was assembled on Knowle Road. A small earthmover, provided by a parent, led the way. Whizzing up and down the road and around the playground to clear the worst of the snow and ice.
Then the foot soldiers moved in with shovels, with some stripping top layers of clothing off as they warmed to the task. The end result was fantastic with the road and pavement completely cleared.
The workparty was rewarded with a glass of wine and a chat in the school staffroom. Of course we have read in the papers of other schools in the UK taking similar action but was Mellor the first?
Amazing what can be achieved on a “self help” basis.
