Water accumulation

Water accumulation on the corner of Longhurst Lane and Gibb Lane

Working closely with our local councillors we have finally been successful in clearing the rainwater gullies and jetting the drains around the junction of Longhurst Lane and Gibb Lane.  Standing water has been causing problems for drivers negotiating the corner opposite The Devonshire Arms.

When this turned to ice, in the run up to Christmas, there was a series of minor accidents which caused alarm amongst local residents who, along with the Mellor Society lobbied for action before a more serious accident occurred.

Tuesday 29th December saw Bob Humphrey-Taylor, Cllr Andrew Bispham, two Senior SMBC Highways officers and an SMBC drainage crew looking down gullies, wielding shovels, jetting and clearing away years of accumulated debris. Two hidden gullies, one either side of the old horse trough, were also uncovered.  As a result the water drained away and to a large extent the problem has been resolved.

We are hopeful that some additional work can be carried out in the area of the horse trough to ensure that the run-off from the field behind No 1 Gibb Lane is directed into gullies and not down the gutter.

We are currently working with SMBC officers to address flooding and drainage problems further along Gibb Lane. It is believed a number of land drains have become blocked, damaged and cut off over the years resulting in flooding and ice. Efforts to resolve these sort of problems are often frustrated through arguments relating to ownership of the verges. This means other SMBC departments have to get involved and correspondence exchanged with owners to agree a course of action. It would be fantastic to think that all problems can be resolved but the reality is SMBC have many miles of roads to maintain within finite budgets and workforce.   We in the Mellor Society seek to get “a fair bite of the cherry” for Mellor and its residents.
